Last Saturday June 05, we all went to attend the Capital Chinese School 2009-2010 End of Year Ceremony.

Before attending the ceremony I got the report cards for Kingsong, Cherry and Rose.

This is the last year for Kingsong in Chinese school. He got 82 out of 100 for his final exam. I am kind of happy with that mark as teacher said that it ranks as the second in his class. Actually, due to the trip to China and band activities, Kingsong’s attendance was very poor, but he did learn Chinese at home. The trip to China also motivated him to learn more and to use Chinese to communicate online with his peer relatives.

Although he is in Grade 8, I sense his Chinese is equivalent to students in Grade one in China. When he was in China, the relative described his oral Chinese as not very influent; let alone reading and writing.

Cherry and Rose was attending Junior Kindergarten. They are learning reading and listening and also do some character writing. Rose seems to be more advanced than Cherry in terms of motivation and ability. (I know I know I should not compare them with each other) Rose is more willing to read characters she know and can sit down to write. Now she can write her name pretty well, and can memorize more characters. When I write down the short poem they read, Rose can recognize it and read it out loud. Cherry just doesn’t seem to be able to focus on learning activity. She is trying to write her name but still need to improve. Their teacher told me that few students in her class can write their own Chinese name.

Just one week before the ceremony, Kingsong asked his teacher if he could play Chinese and Canadian anthems during the ceremony. His teacher was very supportive and after consulting with the Site Administrator, the teacher asked Kingsong to go for it. So although in the Programme, there is no entry for Kingsong’s performance, Kingsong and his four other peers were in the first group to perform at the ceremony.

Cherry and Rose and their classmates had been learning some Chinese songs for a while and all of their classmates also performed a finger song at the ceremony. Below is what they rehearsed to me tonight.

低低头, 吃米米;

游游游, 呱呱呱;

勾勾鼻, 做游戏;

It seems Cherry is more capable in rehearsing. She can rehearse both songs with lively finger movement.
